Liverpool take epic journey to Madrid

Liverpool are due to play Atletico Madrid in their Europa League semi-final on Thursday. However due to the volcanic ash cloud that has grounded all flights across Europe they have been forced to use a variety of transport and will eventually arrive in Madrid having used road, rail and air.

The trip is likely to take them more than 24 hours, but they can’t use it as an excuse if things go wrong on Thursday night. It’s the only option they have and winning this game will give them a huge advantage going into the return leg at Anfield next week. They will have the final in their minds, so the fans will be hoping that this will be enough to make them perform. Many people will be placing football bets on whether this will happen.

The players have been advised to rest as much as possible during the journey so that are ready to play once they arrive.

The question is how many fans will follow them on this 1,200 mile journey? It is likely that a large number of them will decide not to travel and this could mean that Liverpool will have a lack of support at Atletico’s Vicente Calderón Stadium.

With their long journey and reduced fan support, Liverpool will have to be mentally focused on their game if they are to come out with a win in this game. Not to mention, if air travel is not back to normal after Thursday they will have to make the return journey in similar fashion in order to make it for their Sunday away game at Burnley where they are fighting for 4th place in the Premiership.

Mayweather VS. Pacquiao is No More?? Floyd camp declines Arum final offer

Floyd camp declines Arum final offer

MANILA, Philippines - Hopes of salvaging the megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are slim after American promoter Bob Arum’s”final counter offer” was promptly declined by Mayweather’s head adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, and negotiator, Richard Schaefer.

Arum, main man of Top Rank, had given the Mayweather camp until Monday (today in Manila) to determine on his final proposal that both parties allow the Nevada State Athletic Commission to establish the final judgment on the blood tests issue.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Arum advised that both sides explain to the NSAC why their “preferred (blood) testing system” ought be applied or complied, and allow the Nevada body make the final decision.

Mayweather wanted an Olympic-style blood testing to be monitored by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Under the set-up, both fighters should agree to as many as five blood and dozen urine examinations - randomly.

Freddie Roach stated it’s so random that that USADA can knock on your doors in the midst of the night to acquire blood or urine samples, in the weeks, days or just hours ahead the fight, and shortly afterwards.

Pacquiao’s camp said there’s no need for such, and has accorded to three blood tests (one on the first week of January, then 30 days before the match and additional after the match, but was again unacceptable to Mayweather.

Arum gave the offer by allowing the NSAC to determine. And if the Mayweathers disagree, the Top Rank president said he could seal a Pacquiao fight with Paulie Malignaggi on March 13 “within an hour.”

Arum may discover himself making the phone call when he wakes up Monday morning while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after Ellerbe and Schaefer literally thumbed down the final counter offer from Top Rank.

“Random is random. We are all intelligent people and we acknowledge what random testing is. That is what we desire and it has not altered,” said Ellerbe.

“It doesn't make good sense for this to become a commission matter. This is a contractual matter. The commission didn't decide the weights or the purse split or how the foreign television rights would be sold.

“If this is Bob’s final ultimatum, then that’s what it is. That is his decision if he would like to accept that position. I very much hope this fight can be established, but the reason it is at a impasse is because of the way they have managed affairs,” Schaefer said.

Pacquiao is vacationing with his family in Gen. Santos City and his adviser, Mike Koncz, stated the 31-year-old champion doesn’t prefer to establish any further notice on the subject.

The other day, Schaefer stated Mayweather can do away with the USADA, and it’s barely a matter of both camps agreeing on the dates of the blood tests only to be sure that they’re still effective.

But that was the other day.

“We're organised to have this covered in a sense that it's not us deciding or them deciding,” said Arum. “The commission meets on Jan. 19. Mayweather’s people can say why they think additional testing preceding what we agreed to as necessary and we can give our viewpoint.

“Let the commission determine. If they come off and resolve Manny needs to be blood examined every single [expletive] day, then we'll go with that. This is the way to go to give this thing legitimacy. I hope they [Team Mayweather] see reason.”

PACQUIAO VS. MAYWEATHER JR. Updates: PACQUIAO REFUSES TO COMPLY WITH UNITED STATES ANTI DOPING DRUG TESTING PROCEDURES

Schaefer pointed out, "Todd stated that Pacquiao has trouble with taking blood and doesn't prefer to do it so close to the fight. He, Pacquiao, would only agree to have blood drawn ahead the kick-off press conference and after the fight."

Olympic style drug screening involves random sampling of the athlete's blood and urine prior to and afterwards the fight. The USADA routine includes some blood and urine sampling so that all banned substances, some of which do not come out in urine alone, are tested for thoroughly.

"It is unfortunate to hear this from Manny Pacquiao's representatives, especially since, because by now, both parties had worked out all other issues related to this fight," said Schaefer. "Team Mayweather is certainly surprised that an elite athlete like Manny Pacquiao would decline drug testing procedures which Floyd has already agreed to and have been agreed to by many other top athletes such as Lance Armstrong, and Olympians Michael Phelps, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant."

Mayweather, who was advised of Pacquiao's hesitation shortly after Schaefer received word of the impasse, feels Pacquiao has to explain himself immediately or be confronted with accusations from the media and the public concerning his own status as a clean and drug free athlete.

"I understand Pacquiao not liking having his blood taken, because frankly I don't know anyone who actually does," said Mayweather. "But in a fight of this magnitude, I believe it's our obligation to subject ourselves to sportsmanship at the highest level. I have already agreed to the testing and it is a shame that he is not willing to do the same. It leaves me with great doubt as to the level of fairness I would be facing in the ring that night. I hope that this is either some miscommunication or that Manny will change his mind and step up and allow these tests, which were good enough for all these other great athletes, to be executed by USADA."

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions said, "We hope that Manny will act the right thing and agree to the examination as it is an egregious act to refuse the testing and hence, deny the millions of fans the right to see this amazing fight. We just want to make sure there is a level playing field in a sport that is a man-to-man contest that relies on strength and ability. I still hope this decision is coming from someone in Pacquiao's camp and not Manny himself as it would be a shame that an athlete of his stature and who represents his whole country would not be able to show the public or his fellow athletes that he agrees to the highest standards in sports competition."

Pacquiao to run for congress seat in Philippines, for the 2nd time?

MANILA, Philippines (AP)—Philippine boxer Manny Pacquiao submitted his candidacy for the 2010 elections Tuesday, his second attempt at a congressional seat.
Pacquiao defeated Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas last month to win his seventh world boxing titles in seven different weight classes. He was accompanied by his wife, Jinkee, and mother, Dionisia, in filing his candidacy in southern Sarangani province’s Alabel township.
He was defeated in 2007 when he ran for the congressional seat in General Santos city, where he began his boxing career.
A former baker and construction worker born to a poor family, Pacquiao became an embodiment of a rags-to-riches story in the country where one-third of the 90 million people live on less than $1 a day.
Pacquiao told The Associated Press in March he wanted to serve the many poor people in his province.
“I want to help them because I know what they feel right now. It is not easy to help other people. That is a big responsibility. I will focus on that for the meantime,” he told AP.
It wasn’t immediately clear if he will still fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he wins in congress.
Supporters cheered as he released white balloons and showed them his certificate as the lead candidate of his party, the People’s Champ Movement, outside the Commission on Elections office in Alabel, about 620 miles south of Manila.

Will Mr. Pacquiao win this battle? for the 2nd time, I just hope he will be the victor like on his boxing fights!
